Changing a MS -- Crimson Moon

I've gotten a few comments/emails about the revised edition of Crimson Moon and how I'm changing the manuscript. Let me start by saying this: The story will remain the same. However, the book does have issues and I want to strengthen the material if at all possible. How? It's a combination of cutting, revising, and re-writing. If you're curious, I've included two snippets below. You can see what I'm up to and what you can expect.

**I've intentionally chosen the scene I based this story from. I had a vision in my head while driving one day and came home and started writing.**

Old Version:

“Get behind me.”

Caleb’s voice was the most welcome thing my ears had ever heard. I did as instructed, slowly stepping backward. I didn’t break eye contact with the two creatures snarling and snapping, too horrified to look away.

Caleb’s large silhouette appeared in the corner of my left eye. He came around, closing the distance and providing a barrier from the two werewolves ready to shred me apart if presented the opportunity. They snarled louder, growls becoming vicious and angry, matching their non-human lupine faces.

One launched forward, throwing a punch which Caleb deflected harmlessly. The other attempted to deliver a blow as well, aiming for the midsection. Caleb maneuvered effortlessly out of the way, keeping his body in place, continuing to separate them from me. They persisted, making small passes, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

They chose to move together, the one on the left striking out while the one to the right tackled Caleb into the sand. They began to hit him violently, fists flying.

I glanced around in panic, searching for anything I could use. The ladder caught my attention.

If I could be fast enough, and pull a piece free, I could use it as a weapon.

I started forward, unsure of what to do but unable to bear standing by to watch the carnage.

A firm hand gripped my shoulder, startling me.

“Don’t do that darlin’,” Billy whispered. “A man’s got to have his pride.”

I watched helplessly as Caleb attempted to deflect the blows that rained down on his shoulders and back. I averted my head and closed my eyes, fighting back sickness.

I didn’t want to see Caleb’s blood staining the walls and sand.

Energy surged through the pit, brushing painfully across my skin, nearly knocking me over. I gasped and stumbled, remaining on my feet by Billy’s hand locked onto my shoulder. A deep growl rent the air and the force in the room intensified and shifted. The hair on my arms stood on end as the crowd above erupted into absolute chaos.

I opened my eyes and glanced up.

The rail was completely full now, bodies surging against the railing to watch. Men and women stared down, snarling and cheering, their words mangled and distorted.

The blonde girl who knocked me over was still there. Her eyes—like all the others—glowed strangely and shifted color. Her lips quavered as she chanted along with everyone else.

I glanced back down, searching for the source of the growl.

Caleb was no longer on the ground. His body contorted under his black t-shirt, the muscles in his arms expanding as his body grew and doubled in size. I gasped at the incomprehensible thing I was witnessing and Billy patted my shoulder in understanding.

“It’s all right. He’s a big boy, and they done pissed him off.”

Caleb punched the one on his right, sending him reeling through the air, his body making solid contact with the bloodied wall. A nasty crunch vibrated in my ears and he crumpled unmoving to the sand.

Caleb moved swiftly, rushing the other werewolf and grasping him by the throat. He forced him back, pushing his body against the blood stained wall.

The sound in the room increased, voices mingling together. People yelled out frantically, tones garbled and thick.

The werewolf kicked feebly as he used his arms, attempting to deliver blows to get free. Caleb deflected each with his free hand, until the movements became sluggish and uncoordinated, before coming to a stop all together.

Caleb stepped back, releasing his hold and opening his fingers. The man crumbled to the ground, legs dropping from underneath as he slumped. The crowd erupted in cheers as the energy eased from of the pit.

I sighed in relief. My skin wasn’t tingling painfully under the jacket any longer.

“See, no harm done,” Billy offered comfortingly, removing his steadying hand.

I watched Caleb’s back. His arms slowly receded, muscles returning to normal. His frame shifted and his bones cracked into place. I envisioned him closing his eyes, taking deep and measured breaths as he fought that struggle within. He lifted his arms, raking hands through his thick hair. He turned around, brushing the sand free from his shirt and keeping his eyes downcast as he approached.

He was embarrassed. For some reason, having me witness this upset him.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

Emotion strained my voice and I smiled at him, crossing the space between us. He lifted his chin, gazing at me, shimmering ice blue staring back. It was different than the indigo I’d grown used to, but lovely nonetheless.

He waited until I was inches away and he reached for me, lightly touching my arm.

His voice was thick and hoarse. “We should make this look legitimate.”

He didn’t give me the opportunity to consider his words as he bent down, wrapping his arm around my waist and lifting me against his chest. His head bent as his mouth found my own.

If I thought Caleb smelled delicious, he tasted even better. His lips were full and soft as they brushed against mine, and my reserve melted away.

I lifted my arms around his shoulders, hands entwining in silken hair. I lost myself in the strange and irresistible pull that existed between us. I had only kissed one other person in my life, and the experience didn’t even compare.

Everything but Caleb fell away in that moment.

It was just him and I, our bodies impossibly close together.

“That a girl.” Billy’s voice barely registered in my ears. “I’d say he earned it.”

Oh my God.

Caleb. The noise was coming from Caleb.

And he was no longer on the ground.

I looped my arms around his neck, my hands gliding into his silken hair. I lost myself in the strange and irresistible pull that existed between us. I had only kissed one other person in my life, and the experience didn’t even compare.

“That a girl.” Billy’s voice barely registered, seeming far away. “I’d say he earned it.”

I hope you enjoy the new version. I'm busting my arse to get the manuscript in order. Please forgive any typos you might find. This is version zero. After I wrap this up the book will be off to my CPs and Betas and then I'll give the MS another go.

New Crimson Moon Cover Art

I received my cover art for Crimson Moon today. I hired the fabulous cover artist Skyla Dawn Cameron and told her what I wanted. She gave me everything I asked for and more. I'm excited to go back and work on the book. Since it was my first novel, there are several places that needed to be revised and trimmed. The hope is the new version will read faster and smoother. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Look for the book to release on May 15th (prior to the release of Crimson Sunrise). It'll be on several retail outlets, in eBook formats and print. Thanks again for all your support. I couldn't do this without you.

Back to work for me. I'm so swamped. This month has been incredibly draining. Have a fantastic weekend!

Crimson Sunrise Cover & Excerpt

I received the cover for Crimson Sunrise. There is no release date yet, but I will tell you this: Crimson Sunrise is shorter (80k versus the 95k of the first book, since I learned longer isn't necessarily better), and it's a bit different. I hope those who enjoyed the first book in the trilogy will enjoy the second. The third and final novel, Crimson Sunset, is roughly 20k written and I'm thinking it will top out at around 80-90k words.

How's about a snippet for the weekend? This one is definitely PG-13. So keep those youthful eyes away. It's also ends on a humorous note, which works considering this is April Fool's Day. ;-)

Crimson Sunrise Excerpt:

The bathroom door opened, closed, and Caleb appeared in the reflection of the mirror. He lifted a finger to his mouth, indigo eyes crinkling mischievously, instructing me to remain quiet. I kept brushing, pulling more than half of the heavy length of my hair over my shoulder to remove any remaining tangles with the tips of the bristles.

Caleb walked behind me and wrapped his large arms around my waist. I let my hair fall to my shoulders and reached for his neck to pull him down. His breath was hot on my throat as he pressed a kiss to the rapidly pounding pulse along the vulnerable jugular vein, creating ripples beneath the surface of my skin. I closed my eyes and exhaled, going limp.

“Just one more day.” He breathed the words, bringing his lips to my ear while increasing his grip, holding me aloft.

“One more day,” I murmured in agreement. Dropping the brush onto the counter, I watched as it slid noisily into the sink.

He turned me in his arms, plush lips coming down hard and demanding against mine. I reached under his arms, fingers plunging into his back, nails scoring the cotton T-shirt protecting his skin. His lips parted and I ran my tongue along the lower one, teasing the seam of his mouth. He growled, pulling me snug against him, and pressed his hips firmly against my belly.

Our tongues touched, pulled apart, and began circling. His hands were rough as he lifted me by that fleshy piece of leg, hip, and thigh. I wrapped my hands around his neck, using my arms to pull myself up. My legs snaked around his waist, ankles locking together just behind his back. He used his free hand to pull my face closer, tender fingers wrapping into the hair at my nape.

When he pulled away he skimmed his lips across my cheek, the stubbly bristles on his face chafing the skin slightly. He kissed my ear, licking at the sensitive outer shell, and blew a steady stream of warm air inside. I gasped as goose bumps bristled below my skin and heat spread throughout my body. The scents of forest and earth filled my nose, causing my muscles to quake and my body to tremble.

I ground my hips against his pelvis wantonly, the familiar wet heat developing between my legs making me crazed. His groan was muffled by my mouth as his hands eagerly guided me lower, then lower, until his very obvious erection pressed against the sensitive bead at the top of my hammering sex...

“Who’s in there?” Derek pounded on the door, making it shake.

Caleb didn’t let go, growling, “Go upstairs, Derek!”

“Unless you two are in the middle of something, and by something I mean in the middle of hot sex,” Derek snapped. “Then you’d better let me in. Sammie’s upstairs and I’ve got to take a shit.”

You've got to love Derek, right? Have a fantastic weekend!

Crimson Moon Book Trailer

Go ahead, hurl things at me. I have it coming! I swore I would NEVER do a book trailer yet here I am, pimping the one I just made. I suppose the only thing I can do to defend myself is blame someone else, so I'm going to go on the record and say this is all Rachel's (AKA Parajunkee's) fault for making the Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between trailer and creating a scratch.

Either way, I think it turned out all right. My favorite part? The Nine Inch Nails music. Trent Reznor is the shiz and allows fair use in his music so long as proper credit is given, etc. God, I adore him.

Crimson Moon Release Day

The day has finally arrived. I'm not joking when I say it feels incredibly surreal. For those of you who have inquired about e-book format, you can purchase Crimson Moon by visiting The Wild Rose Press (CLICK HERE).  As for kindle -- eventually it will be on Kindle.  It takes a bit of time for things to be placed on Amazon, so I'm not entirely sure when that will be, but when I find out I'll be sure to share.

My dear friend Cari Quinn is also celebrating a release today.  Her super-steamy story, EX Appeal, is also available at The Wild Rose Press.  If you enjoy stories that deliver on the emotion and heat, show her some love by dropping by and purchasing a copy. Wishing you many, many sells, Cari!

I've got some errands but I should be back online later. I'm visiting the oh-so sweet Rebecca's Once Written, Twice Shy blog today, so if you want to drop by, I'd love to see you there.

New Hungry For Your Love Cover

Well here it is, the cover for the upcoming St. Martin's Press release of Hungry For Your Love.  My short story I Heart Brains is included in this anthology and I'm very excited as this will be the first book I'm featured in that will hit the bookshelves. It's being timed for release near Halloween (September 28th), with pre-orders available on Amazon.com and Books-A-Million.

As for the writing front, I continue working on Omega Mine but am hopeful that there is an end in sight.  After that it's onto The Renfield Syndrome, The Company of Wolves, and Dark Hunger on a Killing Moon.  So many stories, so little time at the PC.

Crimson Moon releases in two days.  I'm still in shock to be honest. I hope everyone enjoys reading the story as much as I did writing it.

OH! And by the way...

When I fiddled with my blog, I accidentally deleted my favorite blog links on the sidebar so I can't see when you all post! I'm going to try and fix that today if the children allow.  That's why I've not visited.  I'm sorry!

Alright, I'm off to kid wrangle.  Have a happy hump day!

Almost Here!

Crimson Moon releases this week at The Wild Rose Press. Of all the things I've written this story is probably the closet to my heart because it was the "first."  Sure, I've written poems and songs, but all of the books I dreamed up were nothing more than a fantasy.  It wasn't until I had a vision of Caleb and Emma trapped inside a deep pit in the earth, fighting off werewolves, that I finally caved and gave in to the muse.

It's one of those books that you will never shake, whether people love the story or hate it, because it's so personal to me.  I adore Caleb as no other hero before, and Emma is a force of her own.  It's strange because to me, they are very real people -- even if they only exist on paper.

I should warn everyone, however, that Emma is no Rhiannon.  She's young and naive and wants to believe there is good in this world (no matter how bitter she may seem at times).  The trilogy also becomes notably dark in the second story, but I hope that it's something people enjoy and return to.

So if you're interested, be sure to check back Friday.  I'll be offering links to all the places you can purchase the e-book.  Of course, the print version is also available at The Wild Rose Press and Amazon.  There is also time left to enter The Book Vixen's contest to enter to win a copy of Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between AND/OR Crimson Moon.  You can head on over by clicking the button on the sidebar.

Dead, Undead & Crimson Moon Giveaway

Interested in winning a personalized copy of Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between AND a personalized copy of Crimson Moon?  Then swing by The Book Vixen's Blog and follow her guidelines to enter.  Oh, and don't forget to wish her a very happy birthday. ;-)

Stay tuned.  I have also promised personalized copies of Crimson Moon to some of my other favorite book bloggers.

P.S.  Dad is home from the hospital. Now we have to wait for results from the samples the surgeon took.  Thanks again for all your well wishes, thoughts, and prayers.

First Crimson Moon Review is In

Writing Status -- None
Mood -- Happy But Hot
Playing on itunes -- What You Waiting For? by Gwen Stefani

Just wanted to share this really quickly before I get an ice cold shower since we are STILL without A/C.  The first review for Crimson Moon is in and I'm so relieved. I wasn't sure how the story would be received.  Ashira at Happily Ever After Reviews gave it a 4.5/5 Teacups and had this to say:

If you love intrigue and romance, then this is the novel for you! I hope that I get to read more about Caleb and Emma again soon.

You can read the review in its entirety by clicking HERE.

I hope to make the blogging rounds tomorrow to check in with everyone.  It's too difficult to write or blog when you're trapped in the coolest room in the house (the basement) with all your crazed children as it's raining outside and there is nothing for them to do.

Crimson Moon - New Release Date

I just got word -- Crimson Moon will release on June 25th at The Wild Rose Press, two-months sooner than projected. Of all my stories, I'm most nervous (and excited) about this one. Crimson Moon is the first thing I ever wrote and finished, so it's very special to me. I've included the blurb and a excerpt below.

Crimson Moon Blurb:

Trueblood vampires. Those set apart from common’s by right of blood. Graced with extraordinary abilities such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition - they are the most powerful and feared among their kind. The secret lies within, a legacy evolving from the truest form of magic, and their living bloodlines are the key.

An average routine morning is exactly what twenty-year old Emma Johnson hopes to avoid when she visits Joe’s CafĂ© for a steaming cup of coffee and freshly made donuts. She’s jaded by her small town, the community that has ostracized her, and the empty house that symbolizes what her life has become; a hollow shell. Yet things are not entirely as they appear, and Emma is about to discover she isn’t the normal girl she once believed.

After she is rescued from a horde of demonic bloodthirsty creatures by Caleb, the most captivating person she has ever met, she struggles to accept the unimaginable truth he imparts. That he has been dispatched by the Father she has never known, a powerful vampire from the house of DeViard, to see her safely home. For Caleb is also unique, a werewolf procured to protect the invaluable royal bloodlines from harm.

Soon, the undeniable connection Emma and Caleb share evolves beyond mere attraction into something more substantial. But their time together is short lived, forced to an end when she is sent to the trueblood vampires that claim her as one of their own.

Crimson Moon Excerpt:

“Emma.” Caleb placed his hand on my leg and I turned to him, biting back a gasp. He had silently moved across the distance and was right beside me. The incredible woodsy scent that clung to his jacket was so much better, so much sweeter, radiating from the direct source. The thought, wolf, entered my mind.

“Yeah,” I croaked, causing him to chuckle softly.

“We’re almost there, and I think I should prepare you before we arrive.” He kept his hand on my leg and my body was keenly aware of his touch and nearness. It created the oddest sensation, nearly an electricity. I could feel each and every one of his fingers individually across my jeans.

“Okay?” I managed to keep my voice even, breathing the word in a soft exhale.

The warmth of his breath caressed my face and my eyelids fluttered. His eyes met my own, moving down my nose until they rested on my lips. Shyness caused me to avert my face. My gaze flickered down, eyes freezing on his chest. My heart was racing erratically, somersaulting over and over, excited and very much alive. His nearness swamped me, the mere touch of his hand on my leg so distracting, I couldn’t think clearly.

“You always do that,” he whispered thickly.

I felt his knuckle nudge my chin, forcing my eyes upward. I looked into his face but he wasn’t smiling anymore. His expression changed to something that made my breath cling in my throat. Our eyes locked–green hazel clashing with the darkest blue. I raised my hand until it touched his, unaware I had even moved.

Derek cleared his throat, breaking the spell. I shook my head, leaning back and blinking, slightly disoriented and extremely embarrassed. I did not react to men–much less strange men–like this. A disappointed rumble emitted from Caleb but he allowed space between us.

“This place isn’t exactly where I’d hoped to take you.” Caleb’s voice was a seductive caress that made my skin prickle and thrum. My eyes fluttered and my heart pounded.

As if sensing my reaction he smiled slightly, lifting the corners of his lips. “When we go inside, keep the jacket on, don’t take it off. My scent will mark you. It’s best we keep together inside. We couldn’t tell anyone we were coming, just Sam and his people know.”

“So.” My voice came out raspy and hoarse. “You want me to act like we’re a couple?”

“Do you think that would be too hard?”

I can sleep when I'm Dead

I remember writing Crimson Moon vividly. The story just kept getting larger, and larger, and larger... Before long, I knew it would have to be broken up in at least three separate installments. There was simply too much material and, at the time, I was incredibly wordy (I did try to scale that down in edits). When I finished Crimson Moon, it topped out at a insane 98k words, and as shocked as I was, I was somehow equally proud for writing this whopper of an epic.

Fast forward a few months.

Those three-hundred and forty-eight pages have been absolute hell to edit. I've read the story probably thirty times, and each one is a test in patience. For one thing, my writing has changed significantly. So when I go back and read through CM, I find what I consider to be monumental flaws. It's not easy, and I've struggled not to change the material too much to continue with the same voice and "feel", if you will. After all, the editor chose it "as-is", not some altered version of what I think it should be. I'm not sure if this is a result of my editors at Amira (who have taught me invaluable lessons on editing) or if it's because my writing has matured (CM was conceived as a YA), but I can't help but wince when I read the story and note all the 'sighs' and 'chuckles'. *cringe*

I finished the final galleys last night and sent them in. I'm very anxious, as my editor will be passing them along to the senior-editor and getting that all important release date. I've always tried to be neutral with what reviewers think of my work because it's so subjective, but this story is very special to me. You won't find oodles of smut, and I'll confess here and now to having portions of adverb repetition (I didn't know any better, honestly). I simply hope that others enjoy the journey of reading it as much as I did creating it.

Now, it's on to Crimson Sunrise. I know I said I'd partake in NaNo, and I still intend to. But I have to get on the move and start getting more work completed and submitted.

I can sleep when I'm dead.

Crimson Sunrise

Writing Status - Final Crimson Moon Galleys
Mood - Tired
Playing on ipod - Rock the Casbah by The Clash

It's not "official" but my Black Rose editor has asked about Crimson Sunrise, the second in the Crimson Trilogy. The story is finished, aside from edits for continuity (from Crimson Moon). All I need to do is get to work and get it cleaned up. It's not as long as CM at 80k, but I think that's okay (95k words is a bit much for any story). I submitted a rough synopsis of Crimson Sunrise and added what will occur in the third story (Crimson Sunset). She asked for me to pass it along when it's done, so I'm taking it as a good sign.

At least I know what I'll be working on now. Hopefully, I can wrap those re-writes up before NaNo. *crosses fingers*
If not, I'll be one tired puppy.

P.S. The cover above is not the official Crimson Moon cover...but I still like my version. *grin*

Edits...

Writing Status - Are you kidding?
Mood - Already Tired
Playing on ipod -Here with Me by Dido

The rest of the week and the weekend following will be used up on edits. It's incredible. The line process has truly allowed me to see and correct mistakes I missed before, which I like. Learning more about production and the process has given me a greater appreciation of what editors suffer.

On a side note, I've just finished up the edits for A Kiss Before Dying. I'm doing a "final" read through and afterward it will be off in the mail to Amira. I can't believe it releases in just a week! It's surreal and exciting and terrifying.
