Cover Art, Video & Other Things

I know it's been a long time (too long) since I've updated the blog. Things have been extremely chaotic in my home. Since November we've been battling various flu viruses. None of them have been kind. Combined with the holiday season, I didn't have a whole lot of time to do anything (except complain on Facebook). Fortunately I have some exciting news that, I hope, will excuse the absence.

As I've mentioned previously, I'm attending the SF Ball in Bournemouth this February where Reload Comics will be selling a comic version of Eyes On Me (a short story from the Rhiannon's Law series). All proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust. I was thrilled to be able to take part of something so amazing while also helping those in need.

Recently I received the cover art for the comic:

Then, today, Fwah Storm provided me with a link to a video showing the coloring process of the comic:

For those who've asked, Reload will have any remaining copies for sale on their website following the event. I'll also be hitting the recording studio for The 11th Hour while I'm in the UK. If any video is shot (they've been compiling clips of the actors each session) I'll be sure to share.

Thanks again for all your emails, support and continued generosity. Although time has been limited I have managed to get some writing done.To answer a few other questions: Yes, there are more books following Vampire Mine (which is still my main priority at the moment). There will also be (at this time) two more books following Marked. I will be writing the follow-up to Make Me Shiver (entitled Make Me Surrender) as well. I have decided I will be unplugging from the internet in March (much like I did in August) to get work done prior to the summer. As soon as I have a solid schedule in place, I'll let you know where certain projects stand. Have no fear, my assistant Holly will be around to answer any questions while I'm away.

I'm wishing you all my best in 2013!

Jaime

P.S. I almost forgot! A Kiss Before Dying is being re-released as Kiss Before Dying at Ellora's Cave under the Aline Hunter pen. It's a bit hotter and a few hundred words longer. I'll also be attending the Sassy Seven Naughty Sleepover in San Antonio in February. If you're in the area, I hope to see you there!

Meet Bane: The Ripple Effect

Remember when I said I had a spin-off in for the Rhiannon's Law books? Well, make that two. Bane is a character who showed up out of nowhere. I'm not sure how his story will fit into the universe (I'm thinking it will be erotic romance) but we'll see. I figured I'd share him with you. He's rough around the edges, which means I like him. I hope you like him too. He gives as good as he gets, and Rhiannon isn't sure what to think.

Without further ado. Meet Bane:

*As always, please excuse typos. This is the unedited version of the manuscript.*

The Ripple Effect Excerpt:

Bane was waiting for me when I arrived at Cleaver’s Pizza, standing beside a van parked around the back. He was dressed casually in jeans, a T-shirt, and a black baseball cap—probably to blend in with the locals. No one paid me any attention as I walked alongside the building and stopped at the back of the vehicle. Bane walked around to greet me, giving me a brief nod.

Alrighty then. So far, so good.

At some point in his life I was certain Bane had been a decent looking guy. He was over six feet tall — all muscle — and had a heart stopping smile that went nicely with his ice-blue eyes and blond hair. Unfortunately his nose had been broken numerous times, and a winding scar from his forehead to his chin ruined him from the neck up. If the puckered tissue bothered him, he didn’t let on. He appeared to be comfortable in his own skin. Hell, I was almost positive he enjoyed frightening people with a sadistic sneer that made the scar stretch and widen.

“I see you made it,” he said. No smile, no hello—only a level stare.

“It didn’t sound like I was being given a choice.”

Bane snorted, glanced around, and pulled the back doors to the van open. As promised two Brownings were side by side on the dingy flooring, their obsidian metal clean and unscratched. Four clips were lined above the guns—fully loaded—and two boxes of bullets were placed beside them. Just above that was a double holster, the matching leather free of markings.

“May I?” I motioned to the back of the van and waited.

“Be my guest.”

I moved closer, so someone outside wouldn’t be able to see what I was doing, and checked each sidearm. They were just as good up close, if not better. Bane had a solid reputation, so I wasn’t worried about the quality. The guns would shoot straight, and their aim would be dead-on. Of that, I was positive. There was, however, the matter of money.

“How much?”

“A grand each.”

“You’re sure they’re clean?”

He nodded. “Totally untraceable.

“If you include the ammo, we have a deal.”

His grin told me he was going to barter. “The guns and ammo for three grand. Custom rounds aren’t cheap.”

I would have bargained, but I was short on time. I had to get home, figure out a way to store the weapons and ammo, and pack my things before Goose arrived.

“Deal.” I put the guns on the soft mat inside the van. “I’m going to step inside Cleaver’s and get your money.”

“Not so fast.” Bane clucked his tongue. He reached inside the van and pulled away a piece of cloth, revealing a large, gleaming sidearm. It was a thing of beauty, with an unmarred chrome barrel and a beautiful, hard black plastic grip.

I’ll be damned. Bane had gotten his hands on a Desert Eagle.

“It’s clean as the others and more powerful. Want to kiss someone good-bye? This is the way to do it.”

I lifted the gun, and it felt perfect in my hand. Just heavy enough to know it was there but light enough not to be a bother. “Do you have silver rounds?”

“Usually I don’t bother with questions, but one day I’m going to ask about your obsession with silver.” He reached inside and produced two large boxes. “How about some fifty action express?”

“How many bullets per box?” I took a glance down the barrel, taking in the craftsmanship.

“Fifty.”

“And if I need more?”

“You know where to find me.”

True enough. “How much?”

“Two grand. Non-negotiable.”

No way could I go there, even if I wanted to.

Two thousand dollars.

I couldn’t afford the Brownings and the Eagle. I’d only brought four thousand in cash with me, leaving me a grand short. The rest of the money I’d received from Disco as a monthly allowance had been tucked away in a safety deposit box. I wasn’t sure if I’d need it, but I wasn’t willing to piss it all away on side arms.

“I’ll take the Eagle and the rounds.” I placed the gun on the mat and started to make my way to Cleaver’s to dig the money out of my shoe.

Bane frowned, and damn if it wasn’t a terrifying sight. “You don’t want the others?”

“I can’t afford it.” I glanced at the Brownings. They’d be nice to have, but the Eagle would put a hole in a vampire—or a demon’s—chest. I needed that kind of firepower. The amulet and Sucker only got me so far.

“How much do you got?” He studied me, starting at my head and working his ways to my toes, taking his time.

I couldn’t bite back my temper or stop my smartass mouth this time. “If you’re asking if I’m willing to work off the remainder of the cost with a piece of my ass, piss off.”

He narrowed his eyes. “Don’t flatter yourself, princess. Believe me when I say that you’re not my type. Don’t make me ask again. How much do you got?”

It was dangerous confessing how much money I had on me, but since Marigold’s amulet was around my neck, I figured I would be able to defend myself and my cash if it came down to it.

“Four thousand.”

“A grand short.”

Well hello, Captain Obvious. “I’m aware of that, which is why I said I’d take the Eagle.”

He moved closer and gazed down at me. “A woman shouldn’t have to have a gun to take care of herself. You need a man to protect you.”

Arching my neck, I looked directly into his light blue eyes. “That’s your problem right there. I don’t want a man.”

To my shock, his hard face softened. “Your soul has been carved out. I can see it in your eyes.”

Looking away was my only defense. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yes, you do. When you want to talk, give me a call. I’ve been around a long time and have seen more than you might think.” He waited until I glanced at him to add, “No strings. Just someone to talk to. I wasn’t kidding when I said you’re not my type. No bullshit.”

**

He's a fun character -- and NO he's not a love interest. He means it when he says he has no interest in Rhiannon. I'm jotting ideas down ideas for him now. I hope to start on his book either late this year or in the Spring. :)

Future Works & What's at Stake

**As a forward -- I didn't want to post this. The numerous requests/emails about The Ripple Effect and Edge of Darkness prompted the post. Thank you in advance.**

When I started writing in 2008, it was for ME. I'd spoken with my husband when I got pregnant with our first child and the decision we made was simple: I'd stay home with our children until they started school. Afterward I'd finish my degree and get my ass to work. Not a hard concept. I had no idea I'd venture into publishing, or I'd try to make a career out of it.

The truth is this: Indie authors (not self-published, which is an entirely different topic) don't get an advance. We don't make money prior to any books selling. We sign a contract with a publisher, edit the book and pray to God that we make money when the book releases. It's a game of cat and mouse, with luck playing a huge part. Will we make decent money? Will our books tank? It's anyone's guess.

In my case I promoted the hell outta Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between. As a result (and with a bit of Lady Luck) I built a name for myself. It wasn't easy. I spent months working on promo and writing the second book in the series nearly killed me. Despite fluctuating sales, I continued on and wrote The Ripple Effect.

Which brings me to this post.

Many have asked about the fourth book in the series: Edge of Darkness. I have a decent idea where things are going and I've started plotting out the story (which, as a pantser, is hard). Otherwise I haven't written a word of the manuscript. Why?

Sales.

As hard as it is to confess, the Rhiannon's Law series is my most heavily pirated work (and most abundantly shared). For the most part, readers seem to enjoy the books -- so long as they're free. At first I accepted this, knowing I needed to make as much cash (no matter how small) as I could. Then I started writing under Aline Hunter and discovered a whole new world existed, one in which people would purchase my work and appreciate me far more.

Is this to say my erotic romance readers are preferable to my urban fantasy ones? Not at all. It's simply to state that I have four children to take care for and this is business. I have to do what is in the best interest of my family. If that means writing erotic romance, I'll write erotic romance. Urban fantasy, no matter how much I love it, will take the back burner. As it is I try to write one Rhiannon's book per year (the books drain me) but depending on the release of The Ripple Effect and sales, that could change.

Unlike New York authors, small press ones don't get money up front. Our income is totally reliant on each and every book sold. It's important for people to realize what is at stake here. Do I want to nag? No, of course not. However, the abundance of those who've contacted me asking for ARCs  have to understand where I'm coming from (and the ARCs for The Ripple Effect are limited -- it's a decision I made with my publisher). If you don't buy my books, I won't be able to keep writing them. It's not rocket science; it's simple math.

Now, with that said, I do hope you enjoy the third book. I'm looking forward to writing the fourth. Unfortunately this year is swamped with the books that do support my family. I wish I could write to make everyone happy. I wish I could write and share my stories for free. The truth is I gave up that right when I had children. They deserve more and, as their mother, I will give them more. It's my duty as a parent to look out for them. Just like those who enjoy reading, I have to make living. Thus is the stuff of life.

It's back to work for me. I have several projects lined up this year and time is short. I hope you're all doing well and enjoying the Spring.

As a side: To those of you patiently waiting to buy The Ripple Effect when it releases -- my sincerest thanks, really, for all of you who do support me. You are the reason I can continue writing, and I can't thank you enough. I hope the book is worth the wait. Hopefully I can continue writing the series. I truly hope so. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The Ripple Effect Excerpt

Today I'm doing the first round of my own edits on The Ripple Effect, and I figured I might as well share a snippet. To set up the scene: Disco and Paine's maker has arrived in New York. Since Rhiannon is marked by both vampires, there is the expectation she will serve each equally. Failure to pull off the ruse will result in dire consequences.

All set? Okay, here you go. I only ask that you not copy and/or redistribute the excerpt. If anyone would like to read it send them here. Thanks!

The Ripple Effect Excerpt:

Paine moved into my personal space, wrapped his arms around me, and whispered, “Don’t fight me, Rhiannon. Marius is watching.”

Then, he kissed me.

It was a good thing he warned me. Otherwise, I would have fought him.

At least, I think I would have.

Paine’s lips were plush and cool, feathering over mine, just before he opened his mouth and his tongued snaked out. I wasn’t sure how to respond. Fortunately, he didn’t seem to have the same problem. His tongue teased mine, inviting me to play. I followed his lead, kissing him back. The closeness between us brought back memories I wanted to forget, of a different time and place.

He pulled away, and the heat in his gaze made my toes curl. “I’d almost forgotten,” he murmured, licking his lower lip.

“Forgotten?” I asked breathlessly.

“What a woman tastes like.”

More memories arose. He’d said something similar in the future, something that swept aside my reservations. It was impossible not to ache for him—to love him—when I remembered how alone he truly was. That was the reason I didn’t move away from him, why I lifted my hands and placed one on his chest and the other against his face. He closed his eyes and exhaled in bliss, making me feel even worse.

“This isn’t fair to you.”

“Life isn’t fair.” He opened his eyes and looked at me. “We take what we’re given because there isn’t any alternative. Small moments like these can last an eternity.”

He moved away, taking a large step back. I was going to ask him why when I glanced at the door. Disco stood in the entranceway with Marius at his side. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking, since his maker undoubtedly had him on his best behavior. Still, I did notice the way his lips thinned and his jaw ticced as he regarded us.

“Marius and I are meeting with the leaders of the other families.” Disco took slow, deliberate steps in my direction. “I wanted to see you before we left.”

This time, Disco was the one invading my personal space, wrapping his arms so tightly around me I held my breath, bringing me toward his chest. One large hand cradled the back of my head, arching my neck so he had access to my lips. His kiss was harsher than Paine’s, more demanding. He didn’t ask for control, he took it, dominating my mouth with swirls and plunges of his tongue. Unable to do anything else, I let him do as he wanted. He lowered his hand and cupped my ass.

This kiss was different—one I ached for, one I dreamed about. Delicious and wild, sending me spiraling out of control. I latched onto his arms, holding him close, breathing him in as he ravaged my lips. The scent of cinnamon and cloves was like coming home, sweet yet earthy, everything I’d missed. The world seemed to settle into place when I was in his arms, coming together as though we’d never been apart. I knew we had an audience, but I didn’t care, riding waves of untainted and pure emotion.

Disco didn’t lift his head as Paine had, shifting a fraction of an inch so I could feel his breath on my face. He gazed into my eyes, the heat from one simple look powerful enough to make my knees weak.

“I’ll be back soon,” he said softly and leaned in, nipping my bottom lip playfully, causing me to shudder.

When he let me go, I stayed in exactly the same place, arms loose at my sides.

It wasn’t the words spoken aloud that had me gasping for air, or the kiss that had scattered my thoughts. It was the words he’d spoken in my mind that echoed over and over in my head, a warning if ever I’d heard one.

You belong to me, Rhiannon. You belong to me.”

The Ripple Effect: Done

As of today, The Ripple Effect is done. It's true I still have to write the epilogue, but as you know my endings only wrap things up and prepare readers for the next book. What can I say about The Ripple Effect? Well, for one, it nearly killed me. I thought The Renfield Syndrome was bad...WRONG.

I've always been a pantser, meaning I allow the characters to dictate what happens when I write. I have a general idea of where things are going, but I never quite "know" what will take place. I didn't see several things coming in this book, including something that totally blindsided me. I kept wanting to go back and rewrite the scene, to change what happens. Yet in the end, as much as it sucked, I felt what I wrote made sense. It's weird, but sometimes I think my mind knows all along where a story is going to go but doesn't show me the light until it's ready.

I know some fans will hate me, but I hope they can understand that authors don't always have it easy. Just because a character belongs to us, it doesn't mean what happens to them is something we necessarily want. It's just what happens when you allow the story to take over, to breathe on its own. As a consequence, Edge of Darkness (book four in the series) has changed. I'm going to take a breather from Rhiannon for a while to wrap up projects for Ellora's Cave (including Enemy Mine, for those who have asked). I'll return to her later this year.

Thank you again for all your support, for being so wonderful, and for supporting my work. I truly hope you enjoy the third book. If you like things dark and unexpected, The Ripple Effect should be up your alley. *fingers crossed*

P.S. The Ripple Effect will release this summer. I do not have a precise release date but when I receive one I'll pass it along.

The Ripple Effect Blurb

It's finally here -- the blurb for The Ripple Effect. I'm working on the manuscript and will (God help me) have the book done in January. After I turn it in my editor (and cover artist) Skyla Dawn Cameron promises she'll start working on the cover art. I'm so excited to see what she comes up with!

So do you want to hint of what the book is about? Here you go!

The Ripple Effect Blurb:

There is always a price to pay…

Rhiannon Murphy visited the future, witnessed hell on earth and made choices to change things for the greater good. Unfortunately there are consequences for her actions, the penalties for her interference possibly more than she can bear. Determined to sever her debt with a fallen angel, she pushes everything aside, focusing on locating Marigold Vesta’s resting place.

Until death comes knocking at her door.

When Disco’s maker arrives in New York, he resents Rhiannon on a level she can’t begin to comprehend. Yet Marius isn’t her most dangerous adversary, not by a long shot. Marius’s sire -- a half-demon -- is determined to see the necromancer who stunned the vampire world on her knees. If she won’t bend, he’ll do everything in his power to make her break. No price is too high, meaning no one is safe -- including Disco and Paine.

Dealt a blow from which she can never recover, Rhiannon turns to the only person who can help her: the fallen angel who is relying on Rhiannon to save her soul. Bartering with a creature from Heaven is probably just as dangerous as starting a war with a demon from Hell, but with nothing to lose it’s no longer about life or death.

It’s about getting even.

A Final Update Before Going Dark

So the time has finally come. One more day and I'm turning off my social networks. I am having the lovely Dina James by on Monday but other than that I'm outta here. If I get a release date or other news, I'll pass it along. Otherwise I'm updating my websites, getting things in order, and preparing for the long month ahead. With that being said, I did want to let everyone know a little something about my plans before I unplug.

First: I am not "officially" taking part in NANO (National Novel Writing Month). I'm not signing up on the Nanowrimo site, I'm not adding friends, and I'm not keeping track of the progress of others. Last year was the same. I place too much pressure on myself as it is. If I start worrying my word count is less than this or that person, I'll drive myself insane. Therefore I use NANO as a reason to get my arse in gear and push myself to get 'er done. My goal is to write 5k words per day (or 25k per week -- I'll be working weekends if I don't reach my daily goals to make sure this happens) and wrap up Enemy Mine (Alpha and Omega Shifters, Book Two) and the full length follow-up to my Ellora's Cave Quickie, No Strings.  If I reach this goal prior to the end of November, I'll be focusing all of my attention on The Ripple Effect.

I know, I know! I can hear the emails now:

Why aren't you writing The Ripple Effect first? Are you off in the head? Don't you know people wanted the third book yesterday? We have to know what happens to Rhiannon, Disco, and Paine! What's the hold up?

Well...truthfully...I'm the hold up.

Wait, don't go! I can explain.

Writing The Renfield Syndrome wasn't fun -- AT ALL. Cleaning toilets in public restrooms probably would have been more pleasant. I worked myself up over that book, in ways that most people wouldn't and couldn't possibly understand.

I lost sleep.

I drove my husband and crit partners nuts.

I agonized over the same things over and over again.

I wrote, erased, wrote, erased....and ended up in the same spot I started.

Despite sitting in front of the PC for hours I COULD NOT WRITE that fucking book. I saw everything. I KNEW what was going to happen. But I couldn't get it out. It was constipation of the brain, as if the the central command center was in working order but the plumbing beneath was clogged. You know, it felt kind of like this...

It wasn't writer's block; it was self-doubt. I couldn't do what I once loved, because I was no longer writing for me -- I was writing for everyone else. This does not for a happy writer make.

While I'm thrilled readers enjoy the Rhiannon's Law series, I really need to unwind a bit, let the next book settle in my head, and then I'll return to it. I've already started the process of revising, which must be done completely before I can start wrapping up the book. Due to this I will resume work on The Ripple Effect in December. I realize now that I've been neglecting my writing by revising the manuscript like crazy in an effort to make the third book "even better" than the first two. I can't keep doing that. There is a reason there was such an enormous length of time between the release of Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between and The Renfield Syndrome. If I want a Summer release for The Ripple Effect, I've gotta shake those inner demons.

The button below sums up everything nicely, I think. I've even printed it out and posted it on my cork board -- for clarity and all that.

So fear not, awesome people. I will return. And when I do I hope to have completed manuscripts in my possession. I've got a lot of stories to share and they won't write themselves. The Ripple Effect is on that list, and it is a priority. I just want to prepare myself for the dark places I'm about to take my favorite character. Despite what you might think, Rhiannon has been through a walk in the park. Something bigger, badder, and more dangerous than anything she's ever faced is about to hit town. Too bad the dumbass I'm talking about doesn't know our girl.

It's going to be bitchin'.

I'll see you on Monday when Dina visits. I hope you all have a happy and safe Halloween with your loved ones.

Peace Out!

Rhiannon/Smackdown/Winner

Talk about crazy! For some reason I was confused about the way the smackdown worked. I thought it was done character to character. Turns out it was the overall number votes to determine the winner. Thanks to you Rhiannon took the prize!

See smackdown results here.

As promised, I wrote down all the names of those who voted on Twitter, Goodreads, the blog and Facebook. I put them in order of when I received them and used Random.org to find out who would receive the Amazon gift card.

And the winner is...

New Contract at Ellora's Cave!

I wanted to wait until the contract was in the mail to share the news on my blog. I received a contract offer from a press I've always wanted to be a part of for my hot, racy paranormal romance Omega Mine. Ellora's Cave will be the home of my newest work released under my Aline Hunter pen. It's quite different from my other books, offers more heat, and was a blast to write. Here's the (unofficial) blurb:

A bond forged in blood; a fealty given to the one he desires above all others.

Graced with the ability to shift into any form, Diskant Black is the absolute authority in the world of shifters and, as the omega of New York City, his word is law. Protecting those who share his lineage is more than a job, it is a predisposition ingrained since birth -- nothing is more important. Until a chance encounter with a tiny female sets fire to his blood, brings him to his knees, and turns his world upside down. Ava Brisbane is more than he bargained for in a mate -- beautiful, fragile…human. If he wants to keep her by his side, he’ll have to sacrifice a portion of his soul in order to establish a bond that can never be broken.

A telepath since birth, Ava uses her ability to ward off the things that go bump in the night. When faced with a powerful, sexy shifter who claims her as his own, she’s not sure if she’s frightened or excited by the prospect. Diskant inspires fantasies and desires she’s never experienced, tempting her to lower her defenses, but mating with a shifter comes with a cost, and the price is danger knocking at her door.

When Shepherds -- the hunters of all shifter races -- arrive in New York searching for a former member of Diskant’s pack, he and Ava up the ante as they turn up the heat. As passions ignite and truths are revealed, they’ll have to rely on each other in order to unite the shifter populace and face those who have come to start a war.

Onto other things...

The edits for Dark Hunger on a Killing Moon (book two in the Desires of the Otherworld series) are coming along nicely, and soon I'll begin editing The Renfield Syndrome. For those of you who have asked, I do not have the exact release date for TRS but the book WILL release in early August. I'm currently working on The Ripple Effect, the third book in the series, which is almost halfway done. After that I'm going to wrap up my UF Company of Wolves novel (as yet untitled), begin the fourth installment of the Rhiannon's Law series, Edge of Darkness, and finish Crimson Sunset. For those who have emailed about Crimson Sunrise, the book is currently under edits. I won't have a precise release date until they are done. As soon as I get the information, I'll share it here and on my website. Thank you again for your interest in the trilogy!

It's really quite astounding. I started writing in June of 2008, and I had no idea I would have so many works published in such a short amount of time. I hope I can continue to write stories that you enjoy. It's difficult to write sometimes, since I have so many ideas floating around in my head, but I'll do my best to get them onto the PC and out to you as soon as I can.

Have a fantastic week!

Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between on Kindle

Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between is now available on Amazon.com. You can check it out by clicking HERE. I'm still waiting on Barnes & Noble, but it should be there soon.

In other news, I've been contacted about translation rights for Dead in Turkish! Can you believe it? I've got the contract here, ready to go. When I know more, I'll pass that information along as well. ;-) I know most of you don't need the non-English version, but I still think it's pretty cool!

Hope you all have a fantastic week.

Dead Release and Contest Winner!

It's hard to believe that release day is here. I'm equal parts nervous and terrified. I'm not really sure why. Anyhow, enough about that. You want to know who won the signed copy, right? *grin*

Random Generator picked #23. I counted the comments (going from the first on down) and the winner is Alisha (My Need to Read). Congrats, Alisha! Thanks for entering. I'll be sending you an email shortly to get your information.

For those who are interested, you can purchase a copy of Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between (includes an author's note, the vignettes from the blog, and the first two chapters of The Renfield Syndrome) from Mundania Press. Be sure to use the coupon code RHIANNONSLAW10 to receive 10% off your purchase (for both print and e-book).

The book will be available on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Barnes & Noble, and various other resellers soon. Thank you again for being so damned awesome to me. I'm working as hard as I can to get The Ripple Effect written so I can -- hopefully -- get a spring release date.

Random "Dead"ness

No, that isn't the cover for the re-release of Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between. I considered using it, but I love the covers by Skyla Dawn much more. Since the re-release isn't too far away (May 3rd!) I figured I'd do a blog and share ten random things about Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between. For those of you who enjoy the story, I hope that this blog is somewhat entertaining.

1. Rhiannon's Law was the original title.

2. Disco's name wasn't me trying to be (or thinking I was) brilliant. At the time I was a huge Chris Evan's fan (still am). He was in the movie Street Kings and I "thought" his character's name was Disco. I loved the name and incorporated it into the book (as well as a running joke). Later I discovered Chris Evan's character was actually Paul "Diskant."

3. Cash's name in the original manuscript was Disney. The running joke was that Nala had gotten a disco globe to put in Gabriel's room as a prank (hence his nickname), and they called Cash "Disney" since he was a Walt Disney movie fanatic. This was changed to ensure there were no conflicts with the House of Mouse.

4. In the original ending, Disco was killed. I won't ruin things aside to say that if you've read the book and know what happens to Paul, put Disco in his place. It was a very emotional scene and was done because I've always envisioned Rhiannon with Paine. I figured if Paine let Disco die, it would create a ton of angst in future installments. Unfortunately, when my mother-in-law said, "Hell no," I re-wrote the ending to what it is today. The cliffhanger wasn't a ploy to sell books. It was a way to stick my tongue out at my mom.

5. Rhiannon's name DOES come from the Fleetwood Mac song. Her last name, Murphy, was taken from Robocop. Yes, you'll find a lot of eighties throwbacks in my work.

6. I wrote the book in roughly six to eight weeks.

7. Contrary to what some people think, I have NEVER been to New York. If there are mistakes, they are all mine. If things are correct, you can thank my fabulous friend Tytus (Anthony Fernandez). I had to purchase a map, mark locations, and spend hours on the phone with him learning how Rhiannon would travel and which routes were best.

8. There was one song I listened to often when writing Dead (it kept coming on random on iTunes). So if I had to name one song that reminds me of the book, that would would be it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCAltNXWKow (it is a music video for The Boondock Saints -- I couldn't find another with just an image). Although it should be stated that I listened to a lot of Nine Inch Nails and M83 as well.

9. I had no intention of publishing Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between. It took my mother-in-law six months to convince me to give publication a shot. I started out with Crimson Moon, then I submitted Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between.

10. I envisioned the book to be much darker than it turned out. As a consequence, future installments will reflect what I wanted but didn't fully achieve. *cue Twilight Zone music*

So there you go. Ten random things about Dead. Is there anything you're curious about? Leave me a question via a comment and I'll do my best to answer. ;-) Have a great weekend!

Dead, Undead & The Renfield Syndrome Covers Are Here!!

I told you they were coming, here they are! Talk about the best birthday present ever! Thank you to my fantastic cover artist Skyla Dawn Cameron! She managed to convey exactly what I wanted. The wrap around art is fantastic (the image goes all the way around the book). When I have the final images of those, I'll post them for you to see.
